Assignment #4 - Archtecture and Movies

South Caroliniana Library

U.S. Library of Congress

Part 1- The South Caroliniana Library, located on the Horseshoe, is an antebellum building was designed by Robert Mills in 1838 after the Library of Congress. Completed in 1840 this was the nation's first free standing library. Similar to the Library of Congress, the South Caroliniana Library has large columns. The columns are like those from ancient Greece. The style of columns is known as doric, straight with out much design. The library is made of bricks, because during this time it was the cheapest material to make building s out of. Another interesting design similar to the Library of Congress is the skylight in the Bulfinch Room. All in All the South Caroliniana Library is on of the most interesting architectures on the horseshoe, on the campus, and in the city of Columbia.

Part 2- Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky is a drama based on the relationship of fashion icon Coco Chanel and composer Igor Stravinsky. Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky begins with Coco Chanel attending one of Igor's performances. Several years later Igor is forced to flee France from the Russia invasion with his family in tow. Coco Chanel, who is mourning over her ex-lover Boy, invites him and his family( his wife is suffering from consumption) to live in her villa. The passion between these two eccentric and radical people builds throughout the entire movie; the audience can feel the tension and is eager for something to happen. Through the summer months their relationship and affair build alongside Coco Chanel releasing the oh so famous Chanel No. 5 and Igor developing in his own way with his music.
The costumes of Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky are simply Chanel. Always wearing the classic pearls with a simply elegant white or black dress. The costume designers knew exactly what they were doing when they dressed the actress who played Coco Chanel. My favorite of the dresses was the black with the diamond in crusted neckline. Besides the beauty of the Chanel costumes, the costumes reflect on the passion of the relationship: The simplicity of Igor's three piece suit contradicts the modern, elegant designs of Chanel's daily clothing.
