Assignment #4 - Archtecture and Movies

South Caroliniana Library

U.S. Library of Congress

Part 1- The South Caroliniana Library, located on the Horseshoe, is an antebellum building was designed by Robert Mills in 1838 after the Library of Congress. Completed in 1840 this was the nation's first free standing library. Similar to the Library of Congress, the South Caroliniana Library has large columns. The columns are like those from ancient Greece. The style of columns is known as doric, straight with out much design. The library is made of bricks, because during this time it was the cheapest material to make building s out of. Another interesting design similar to the Library of Congress is the skylight in the Bulfinch Room. All in All the South Caroliniana Library is on of the most interesting architectures on the horseshoe, on the campus, and in the city of Columbia.

Part 2- Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky is a drama based on the relationship of fashion icon Coco Chanel and composer Igor Stravinsky. Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky begins with Coco Chanel attending one of Igor's performances. Several years later Igor is forced to flee France from the Russia invasion with his family in tow. Coco Chanel, who is mourning over her ex-lover Boy, invites him and his family( his wife is suffering from consumption) to live in her villa. The passion between these two eccentric and radical people builds throughout the entire movie; the audience can feel the tension and is eager for something to happen. Through the summer months their relationship and affair build alongside Coco Chanel releasing the oh so famous Chanel No. 5 and Igor developing in his own way with his music.
The costumes of Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky are simply Chanel. Always wearing the classic pearls with a simply elegant white or black dress. The costume designers knew exactly what they were doing when they dressed the actress who played Coco Chanel. My favorite of the dresses was the black with the diamond in crusted neckline. Besides the beauty of the Chanel costumes, the costumes reflect on the passion of the relationship: The simplicity of Igor's three piece suit contradicts the modern, elegant designs of Chanel's daily clothing.

Assignment #3- Art Criticism

The Delineate artwork was dramatically fun. I like how extreme some of the pieces were; for example Blindspot's subject was a large doll head on top of a smaller statue's body.  Just looking briefly at the gallery each piece of work was full of color, lines, and space, this is what brings all the pieces together. The  artworks used a contrast of bright colors and black lines to create negative and positive space.

Julie Puttgen
Call of the Birds
Describe: Call of the Birds is a multi- piece of work that focuses on birds. The artist also uses words: now and look, in the piece. The artist used spray paint and charcoal on paper to create this piece of work.

Analyze: There is repetition and emphasis of birds in the piece. The different cubes created out of paper are variety of shapes and sizes. All the pieces are brought together with different hues of pink, blue, and tan. Some of the birds are flying, thus creating movement through space. The artist seems to have randomly place the pieces together on the wall.

Interpret: The meaning behind Call of the Birds as I interpret the piece is being free at all times. All the birds are in nature and not caged, most of them are flying. The artist made it look like was different times of the day by using light blues and white for the day and dark blues and white stars for the night. The light hues of the variety of colors. The mood of the work is light and free paralleling the meaning.

Judgement: I really like this artwork because of the colors, subject, and meaning. It does though seem like decorations that I would hang up in my apartment. I have seen pieces that are cubed and different shapes with similar colors hanging up in some of my friend's homes. The difference between those and this one is that Call of the Birds  has meaning and I really like the meaning of being free and light.

Assignment #2- Aesthetics

Athletic Training Students
Aesthetics is the appreciation of beauty in anything: art, nature, science, etc. The four domains of creativity are extending fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. A practical experience that I had this week was working the sidelines of the Carolina football game as an athletic training student. Setting up  the sidelines with water, Gatorade, the athletic training bags, the port-a-cools (the big fans) is a lot of work but emotions that run through the fans to the players onto the field is experience that I will never forget. It starts in the Athletic Training room, all the TVs are off and no one is talking, the silence is something no one wants to break. As soon as you step onto the field the smell of grass, beer, and hot dogs takes over your senses. 2001 sounds C-A-R-O-L-I-N-A runs across the field, Cocky starts to shake the cage, and the players run out. The spirit in the Williams Bryce stadium is unbelievable its impossible to not smile and not be a proud Gamecock.  Being on the field during a game is like being onstage at your favorite concert.  It was one of the most exciting experiences of my life and I can't wait to do it again this Saturday.
