Assignment #11 Phantom of the Opera

1. This movie combines many art disciplines. Which ones were present? Can you name 5Art disciplines is the different categories in which art can fall into. Phantom of the Opera displays many of these disciplines including: dance, theater, music, film (if you are watching the movie), and visual art. Phantom of the Opera takes place in a theater where many of the productions are opera, thus including dance and music. Phantom of the Opera is not just an on stage Broadway performance it is also a movie, allowing it to be considered in the discipline of film. The set used in both on-stage in film involve realistic period set designs, including famous paintings, sculptures, and architecture.

My favorite song from both the on-stage performance and movie is Masquerade. I love how dramatic and rambunctious this part is, was well as visual aesthetics of the elaborate and elegant costumes. During the opera the owners of the Paris Opera house are throwing a Masquerade to celebrate the success that have recently come into. The people are dancing and singing on and around the grand staircase, the setting is just magnificent. It is not only the wealthy people who are celebrating but those who put in the work to make the production a success. On a side note, Christine is engaged. All this celebrating shortly comes to a stop when the phantom of the opera enters and does not like what is going on. The song is about being whoever you want to be and no one will ever know: a king, a devil, a ram. It is also about celebrating in the spectacular that is surrounding you.

Assignment #6- Theater

This type of stage is know as proscenium arch stage found first in ancient Rome.  In proscenium theater the stage is border by a large proscenium arch, which is most times has extricate designs and are beautiful . The audience faces the stage, which is usually several feet taller than the audience, this allows them to see the stage better than if it were at ground level.  Stage and set designers create backgrounds on cut cloths, back cloths, ground row, and props that mimic what the scene would look like if were actually occurring. At home this is the type of theater I attend at the Chrysler Hall in Norfolk, Va. I have seen many plays and musicals there including Lion King and Wicked. In New York I have seen on Broadway productions in proscenium theaters including Phantom of the Opera and Mamma Mia!

Assignment #5- Dance

"Some dance to remember, some dance to forget."- The Eagles. People dance to because they are happy, because they are sad: to express emotions, others dance for fun and socialize, or they dance because it is what they know how to do. I dance for fun usually in a social environment. I really like it when a bunch of people are dancing because it is easy to feed off their energy and enjoy what you are doing. I also dance when I just have to urge to get up and dance, it helps to let go of stress, just to live in the moment. When I see someone who can really dance, I usually get chills. Its amazing how athletic dancers are and how they can move their bodies to do what they want; they can create stories and pull emotions out from their audience. I wish that I was able to dance as well as they can. The dancer and choreographer make dance good. They have to have to right moves to keep the attention of the audience, to amaze the audience. The dancer has to be able to bring alive what the choreographer has puzzled together. When these two come together the production of the dance is mesmerizing.

This is one of my favorite dances from So You Think You Can Dance. I like it because its a slow hip-hop and the story is really brought to life by the dancers, I just love to watch it!
